WPPI 2011

With so many things going on these days, I hardly have time to blog! But my good friend Lawrence Chan posted on his blog the schedule for his stay in Vegas while WPPI 2011 is going on. As you guys already know, if you are a wedding or portrait photographer, this event is not to be missed! This will be my 5th one attending and I am really looking forward to it. With over 15,000 photographers from all around the world, it is a week long event that will allow you to check out various vendors, meet & network with other photographers and hopefully walk away with some fun and inspirational ideas for your business. Every that I have attended, I felt like I grew little bit as a photographer.

Any ways, one advice I would like to give everyone that is attending for the first time is to soak everything in as much as you can. Do not try to be at 100 places at the same time. Pick out few things that you want to learn, people that you want to meet and really maximize those opportunities and develop good relationships with fellow photographers and vendors. I know there are lot of parties to attend to but keep in mind that those are just means to an end. You want to just walk away with a bad hangover/headache when it’s all said and done. But at the same time, don’t forget to have fun!

I wanted to quickly write up my schedule and post it here – hope to meet many new photographers as well as reconnect with some of my friends in the industry. I know it will not be possible to meet everyone but I’ll do the best I can. Feel free to follow me on twitter @kennykim and hopefully we can connect:

Sunday February 20th:
Check into MGM Grand Signature Hotel (this hotel is closer walk to the convention and much more quiet than MGM)
Heading to Pictage Party then to my good friend Becker’s [b] School Party at night.

Monday February 21st:
I will be walking around WPPI Tradeshow during the day. Come by Pixel2Canvas booth #1260. I will be there at 10am. I will have a few copies of my books to sell & sign if you want to grab one there.

Bludomain Happy Hour – I will be at Bludomain’s Happy Hour from 6:30-8:30pm. Come by and let’s hang out!

Tuesday February 22nd:
During the day I will be at WPPI Tradeshow floor.
I will be doing my Platform Class in the evening from 6pm to 8pm. Everyone is suggesting that you pre-board for classes to guarantee a seat this year.

Pictage Party – After my platform class, I will be heading to Pictage Party. You can get your tickets here: http://bit.ly/eAjRBz

Wednesday February 23rd:
Tradeshow Floor all day! I will be at Kodak Booth doing their K-Zone at 11:30am. It doesn’t stand for Kenny Zone but I will pretend that it does. I will be there with Pictage’s Simon Anderson and the famous Bianchi twins! So come by and show some love.

I might be doing a tour of Zappo’s in the afternoon. Still pending.

In the evening I will attend WPPI award night. I didn’t enter any prints this year (no time – or just bad time management on my part) but it’s always fun to see the latest trend and who’s doing what in our industry.

Thursday February 24th:
I always feel pooped out at the end of the week and always wished that I stayed an extra day to recuperate. So I will attempt to that on this day. Nothing planned yet. Maybe a fun photoshoot in Vegas?

Friday February 25th:
Back to the frozen tundra of Chicago 🙁

So here’s my schedule! It’s not 100% yet as I am sure things will come up/change. If you are going to WPPI, let’s connect. Hope to see some of you guys there. Again, here’s my twitter @kennykim so let’s keep in touch this way. See you soon!

Every year WPPI (Wedding & Portrait Photographer International) holds a print competition at their convention in Las Vegas. It is the biggest event for folks in this industry and this year it did not disappoint. After observing last year’s print competition and seeing how exciting it was to see your work get critiqued by panel of well-qualified judges, I finally conjured up some courage and decided to enter some of my prints this year.

All of my images were entered into the Premiere category – reserved for people entering the contest for their first time. Over 3300 prints were submitted from all over the world and I am pleased to announce that 5 out of 6 that I submitted received an Accolade of Excellence in that category. It is one thing to have your friends and family members tell you that your images are great. But to have international qualified judges recognize your work is definitely humbling and a honor. I learned so much from sitting in on the competition and look forward to submitting more images next year.

If you have not entered anything before, I highly encourage you to do so. Also here’s a secret. So much information and knowledge can be attained about photography just by sitting in on those critique sessions. I walked away with some great tips which I will apply this year. The best part is that these advice are all free! 🙂

They even wrote a press release for me – it makes it sound so official! Thank you WPPI for this award and opportunity! Here is the official press release and the images that won.

And finally, this is my sixth submission that did not win anything – yes this is probably my most favorite one out of the ones I submitted. I know the judges did not like the dark black area surrounding the image, this shot took much patience, planning and positioning to capture it. So I want to share this with you any ways. The final image is:

All in all it was a great experience and I look forward to participating it again next year. Thank you WPPI for the recognition and for putting on such a great competition.
