We were fortunate to partner up again with Dave Cross of NAPP and Yanni Tzoumas, the executive editor of Grace Ormonde Wedding Style magazine join our team. Here are few photos from the day. I got to work with the couple covering the engagement session style while Ray covered the bride and groom portion of the shoot (These files are STRAIGHT OUT OF THE CAMERA – resized and slightly sharpened in Photoshop using BlogStomp action):

Big thanks goes out to them along with Brent Cline, Kenny Nakai and all the other volunteers and models who came down to give us a hand with this workshop. I’m very excited to announce my two upcoming events in September & March:

2) Kenny Kim PhotoVenture III – Emilia & Romagna Region
March 14-20, 2011
http://photoventure.kennykim.com

I am elated to announce this workshop again. We are visiting a whole new region that I have not fully explored. On this journey, we will start by visiting Florence and a couple of cities surrounding its beautiful Tuscany region. Then we will march up to one of the richest and developed regions in Europe called Emilia – Romagna. It has one of the oldest university in the Western World and filled with numerous Renaissance cities such as Modena, Parma, Ferrara and Bologna. If you are a wine, food, fast cars and art lover, this region covers it all. We will have two photoshoot sessions: one with model bride/groom & another an engagement session – giving us chance to add some great images for our portfolio and few classroom times to learn more about our business. Kenny Kim will go over his workflow, networking & marketing tips and share some of his insights on how he approaches the wedding day as well as other topics related to weddings.

So expect to see various treasures Italy has to offer. Our Italian tour guide Max Brunelli has planned a wonderful tour and excursions. Arrive with excitement and leave with memories that you will cherish for years to come. Improve your portfolio working with Italian models. Participate in teaching & learning times organized by Kenny as well as other attendees. Best of all, get ready to have some fun – besides, there is no better way to spend your tax write-off! 🙂

Visit http://photoventure.kennykim.com for more details. I can’t wait to see you there!

In Hollywood, most production companies will attempt to make a sequel film if the first one ends up being successful. But we all know that in most cases, the sequel is never as good as the first one. One might have expected the same result when Ray Santana and I decided to do another Portfolio+Workshop down in Miami, FL – in just three months after launching our first one back in September 2009. But when we factored in the warm weather, gorgeous models, amazing sponsors, great teaching and enthusiastic students, we knew it was going to be another hit. The Biltmore Hotel agreed and love the idea so much that they allowed us to use their facilities again during one of their busiest time of the year (week before the Super Bowl).

I just returned from Miami few hours ago back to the cold tundra of Chicago. My normal reaction would have been to cuddle up in a warm blanket and watch some TV or sleep to catch up on rest. However I think the adrenaline from returning from such a fun/successful workshop still has not worn off. So I decided to use that energy to blog about the experience.

We had attendees that flew from various locations throughout the US and Canada. It was so refreshing to see many photographers passionate about wanting to take their craft to a new level. From the starters to the seasoned pros, they all came to learn something new – not just from the instructors but also from one another as they shared and networked. The first half of the day was filled with classroom style teaching by Ray Santana, Jim Garner, Dave Cross and yours truly. I loved how each of us brought different elements to the table. But when combined together it became useful and practical things that we can all take away. When we were not instructing, we became like one of the students all learning from one another as well. Then the second half of the day was filled with portfolio shoot. Ray, Jim and I all each took our models and spent our time photographing them in separate groups while the attendees got to jump around from different instructors to another to capture all the models. In my group I allowed each of the attendees to have a few minutes to take time to lead our group in posing the models while we helped and shared with each other our camera settings and posing ideas. We shot until it got dark and to be honest, unless the darkness stopped us, we could have gone all night long.

I can go on and on talking about this but I wanted to share with you guys some of the photos that I captured during the shoot. I cannot wait to see what the others have come up with. I mainly worked with Lucy – who flew in from Utah the night before to join us. Even she gave us some good advice on how to pose and work with models.

I got to take a few shots of another model Barbie

I got to take a few shots of another model Barbara

Here is our group - So thankful for everyone that came to the workshop.

We also would like to thank ALL our sponsors that believed in what Ray & I are doing. We could not have done this without your help! Big thanks to: Our models Lucy, Thalita, Ken and Barbara for doing an awesome job in helping us capture some amazing images. To Ines Di Santo for sending us incredible wedding gowns. To Xquisit Events for providing us with amazing flowers. To the Biltmore Hotel for allowing us to use their beautiful venue again despite their busy season. To all our friends that gave us a hand before, during and after the workshop. By the way, check out Kenny Nakai’s blog for some behind the scene coverage of this workshop. Thanks Kenny for helping us out.

We cannot wait to do this again. We have some awesome ideas in the works so stay tuned for more! Portfolio+Workshop

This past weekend I escaped the frozen tundra of Chicago and trekked down to Miami to hang out with Ray Santana & Kenny Nakai. What do three photographers do when the get together? We go shooting! We teamed up w/ Ray Santana (a.k.a. Uncle Ray) to shoot his clients engagement session on Saturday followed by a gorgeous Jewish Orthodox Wedding on Sunday at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables – where we will be doing our PortfolioPlus Workshop on January 27th.

We will post some photos from the wedding later on. For now, here are some photos I captured of Olga & Jose. We met in the center of South Beach, Miami area. We started out walking around Lincoln Road then drove over to Key Biscayne to finish off the session with a beautiful sunset scenery over the ocean. Everything about the shoot: The couple, weather, location, was beautiful. I can’t wait to do another lifestyle engagement session here again. Thanks Ray for allowing us to tag along with you.

Back in September Ray Santana & I hosted a workshop called Portfolio + Workshop with the one and only [b]ecker as our guest speaker. We even had the pleasure of the SEO guru Lawrence Chan (tofurious.com) make a special guest appearance. Attendees from all over the US, Canada & Panama congregated to the historical Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables – Miami, FL. The atmosphere was amazing, people/attendees we met were eager and great folks that wanted to step up in their wedding photography, gorgeous models and just overall a great time together. By the way, visit Kenny Nakai’s blog for more indepth coverage of this workshop.

Here is Ray & I giving our talks to the attendees. Ray is a fun guy but when it comes to giving sound advice about photography, he gets serious!

We could not have asked for better attendees. They were all there with good attitudes, eager to learn and share with one another. I had so much fun getting to know them and look forward to seeing their success! I saw that many of them have already starting applying what they learned into their business. So cool!

Introducing: Portfolio+Workshop II – JANUARY 27, 2010 – Miami, FL
Portfolio + Workshop
We had so many requests to do something like this again. So Ray and I have put together a program that will hopefully continue on the energy of what we started out originally. This time we have the pleasure of having Jim Garner from Seattle, WA and Dave Cross from NAPP Jim was recently recognized by American Photo Magazine as “One of the Top Ten Wedding Photographers in the World.” Jim Garner has a unique style that consistently wins accolades and awards Nationally and Internationally. Dave Cross is Senior Developer, Education and Curriculum for the National Association of Photoshop Professionals and is involved in all aspects of the training that is provided to NAPP members, including the content of seminars, conferences and workbooks. We are excited about partnering with them for this workshop. Please visit the website: http://portfolioplusworkshop.com or follow us on Twitter: PP_Workshop for more information.
