Chicago Indian Wedding Published on Chicago Social Bride 2012

Back in June of this year, I had the privilege of photographing a big Three Day indian wedding for Purvi & Pratik. It was a big reunion for me as I had photographed Purvi’s sister, Nicki’s wedding back in 2009. Indian weddings are filled with numerous tradition/festivities and I was privileged to spend the entire three day with the Baman family again.

It was exciting news to find out that their wedding had been featured on Chicago Social Bride’s big 5th anniversary issue. What a perfect way to remember their wedding again. Big thanks to all the staff at Modern Luxury for publishing my work in this such big issue! Here’s a photo of the cover and the spread. For bigger image, click on the photo below.

The wedding took place on June 18, 2011 at the Marriott Oak Brook Hills Resort in Oak Brook, IL. Big thanks Rikita Shah, groom’s sister that I got to meet at this wedding. She is the Marketing Manager at the Elysian Hotel in Chicago and I’m excited to be working with her next May for a wedding there. Shout out to Collin Pierson & Shane Rodimel for teaming up with me on this event. And last but not least, thank you Purvi & Pratik for being such amazing clients!

Serendipitous Story of Caili & Neil – Chicago Engagement Session

August 1st, 2011

Call it a small world or serendipitous, Caili & Neil were meant to be together and I was meant to be their photographer. Let me try to explain (I hope I don’t butcher their perfect story): Caili & Neil both attended University of Illinois but they did not meet until Caili’s graduation. At that time, [...]

Call it a small world or serendipitous, Caili & Neil were meant to be together and I was meant to be their photographer. Let me try to explain (I hope I don’t butcher their perfect story): Caili & Neil both attended University of Illinois but they did not meet until Caili’s graduation. At that time, Caili had a friend who had a crush on Neil. This friend dragged Caili to come out and meet Neil and his brother. Caili being a good friend she is obliged and tagged along. She had a great time but did not think much of the encounter. Neil went on couple of dates with Caili’s friend but there wasn’t any chemistry there and just remained friends. Fast forward a bit – Neil gets a job at an advertising agency in Chicago. Short while after, Caili unknowingly got a job at the same agency as a receptionist allowing themselves to reconnect again. Neil & Caili became good friends and by then, Neil started showing his interest in Caili. He must have asked her out on a date at least 20 times before she finally agreed to go out. As they got to know each other – it turns out that they grew up about 10 minutes apart from each other but they did not meet until Caili was about to graduate. Talk about so close yet so far away! Even now they live in the same building but few floors apart. Pretty soon they will finally be together for good.

When Caili inquired about my services for her wedding, I was traveling in S. Korea. I got her inquiry around 4am (thanks to jet lag) and as soon as I saw a picture of her, I immediately connected with her and replied back letting her know that I was going to be her wedding photographer. When I met her, I realized that I actually met her once briefly in college through a mutual friend. Never did I realize that I would be her photographer one day. I feel like her wedding in September will be a perfect ending to a beautiful story. Caili & Neil are so much in love and I did not do much convincing to show their feelings for each other in front of the camera during the eSession. Here are some photos we captured during their fun session in Chicago.

My buddy Ray Santana & I started Portfolio + Workshop with a goal to help photographers get their wedding business started on the right track. The first four workshops were held down in sunny Miami but this time we decided to take it on the road. Our next location was obvious: we wanted to bring Portfolio + Workshop to the coolest city in the U.S.!!! I might be a bit biased since I am from here but if you come to visit, you’ll agree with me (Just stay away during the winter ;-) ) that Chicago was the perfect place to host our next workshop.

We gathered at Kenny Nakai’s brand new studio in Chicago. Nathan Holritz of Photographer’s Edit joined us as our guest speaker as well as our sponsor for this event. Many friends in our industry have gathered to make this event possible. Big thanks goes out to Lillian at Starlight Makeup in Chicago for the amazing job styling the bride & the groom models. Gorgeous bouquets were designed by Grace at Vale of Enna Flowers. Charlene at Sweet Chic Events, Inc. & Pure Kitchen Catering provided a sweet table top for everyone to photograph.

Big thanks goes out to: Pixel2Canvas, Photographer’s Edit and Album Crafters for their support in sponsoring this workshop along with Camera Bits and Kubota Image Tools. We also like to thank Courtney Hildebrand from Modern Luxury Media for paying us a visit to talk about the importance of advertising.

All in all Portfolio + Workshop V was a big success and we are glad that photographers that attended this workshop left with valuable lessons and tools to help them get their business started. Here are some photos that were captured of our models during our photoshoot session the second day:

Here’s our group. I think some of us were a little bitter from the cold weather (hint: Uncle Ray). :-)

Our goal during the shoot was to help the photographers learn how to capture these kind of images right out of the camera. Most us put our gear in Auto mode with AWB and spend countless hours behind the computer trying to perfect our image. Instead we taught everyone how to use proper color temperature and exposure to get the results in your camera. These images were pretty much out of the camera with a little saturation & sharpening added along with a touch of skin softening – three quick actions using Kubota Image Tools) will help everyone to learn and perfect the craft of using your camera as a tool to capture what you see. Hope to see you guys at the next workshop. Stay tuned for our next location in the future. For more information, visit the website.

Engagement pictures that make you “die”

Ok, so here’s proof that men do think about their wedding day. Maybe not to the same extent that women do, but we do put some thought into the day – sometimes even years prior to the actual wedding.

A few years ago while I was living at the University of Illinois doing some freelance photography and graphic design, I met JR. We were both playing basketball on our lunch breaks at the Men’s basketball facility and developed a friendship right there on the courts. One day while shooting some hoops, JR told me that if and when he got married, he was going to hire me to photograph the big day. I think at the time, he already had the girl in mind.

JR and Kristie met in college while working closely together in the athletics administration office. They were both athletes, although technically JR was Kristie’s boss (she was interning at the athletics office). They started out as friends, both having their own significant other at that time. Eventually those relationships ended and they began spending more and more time together. Sparks flew, friendship grew, well you know, the rest is history. Next thing I know, JR contacts me to inquire my wedding services and all of us sat down one night at Starbucks coffeeshop to talk about the wedding day. It’s been some time now since I first met JR but two weeks ago I had the tremendous honor of photographing JR with his adorable fiancé Kristie for a downtown Chicago engagement session.

We spent the afternoon weaving through the crowded downtown streets of Chicago, which is typically packed on a Saturday afternoon, but even more so because of the gorgeous weather and also with the filming of Transformers 3 going on. In the midst of it though, we managed to escape the crowds, get kicked out at couple of different places and capture a ton of great moments. Afterwards, the couple treated myself and my assistant of the day Ashley to a nice sushi dinner and got to know each other even more over tasty food!

JR & Kristie are two of the most generous and giving people, and I was deeply touched by a sweet note I received from Kristie after she saw the images from their engagement session. Part of her note was so great, I just had to share (with her permission):

“Kenny, the – pictures – are – AMAZING. Not sure if you ever watch Rachel Zoe, the celebrity stylist, but she has a tagline for when she loves something and it’s ‘I Die.’

So Kenny, ‘I Die‘. The photos are unreal. I had a hard time picking my favorites because they are all individually incredible. I am over the moon that we have such gorgeous memories of our engagement. You really captured such a natural and open side of our relationship… JR and I keep saying ‘that’s how we feel, it’s just now conveyed in a photo!’ “

In the beginning of our photo shoot, I yelled (to Kristi): “Strike a pose!” JR thought I was talking to him and followed my instruction as well. We had so many fun moments like this during our shoot. It was so much fun working with them.

Here is a fun/lesson photo: During my photoshoot, I help my clients with posing tips usually by showing them how to do it. This is when it goes too far and things get a bit awkward. I think I got Kristie a bit jealous here. I never ask my clients to do anything that I would not do myself – literally!

I think Kristi is getting little jealous.

Thank you Kristie & J.R.! I can’t wait to spend the day with you guys back in the old stompin’ ground of U of I. We are going to have so much fun together with everyone!
