We were fortunate to partner up again with Dave Cross of NAPP and Yanni Tzoumas, the executive editor of Grace Ormonde Wedding Style magazine join our team. Rather than trying to recap the day with words, sit back and enjoy this 2 minute video created by the talented guys at Chris & Oliver Cinema tell the story of the day:

Here are few photos from the day. I got to work with the couple covering the engagement session style while Ray covered the bride and groom portion of the shoot (These files are STRAIGHT OUT OF THE CAMERA – resized and slightly sharpened in Photoshop using BlogStomp action):

Big thanks goes out to them along with Brent Cline, Kenny Nakai and all the other volunteers and models who came down to give us a hand with this workshop. We would also like to thank all of our sponsors as well as The Four Season Hotel staff for making this possible. You can check out Kenny Nakai’s blog post for additional recap from this event.

I’m very excited to announce my two upcoming events in September & March:

2) Kenny Kim PhotoVenture III – Emilia & Romagna Region
March 14-20, 2011
http://photoventure.kennykim.com

I am elated to announce this workshop again. We are visiting a whole new region that I have not fully explored. On this journey, we will start by visiting Florence and a couple of cities surrounding its beautiful Tuscany region. Then we will march up to one of the richest and developed regions in Europe called Emilia – Romagna. It has one of the oldest university in the Western World and filled with numerous Renaissance cities such as Modena, Parma, Ferrara and Bologna. If you are a wine, food, fast cars and art lover, this region covers it all. We will have two photoshoot sessions: one with model bride/groom & another an engagement session – giving us chance to add some great images for our portfolio and few classroom times to learn more about our business. Kenny Kim will go over his workflow, networking & marketing tips and share some of his insights on how he approaches the wedding day as well as other topics related to weddings.

So expect to see various treasures Italy has to offer. Our Italian tour guide Max Brunelli has planned a wonderful tour and excursions. Arrive with excitement and leave with memories that you will cherish for years to come. Improve your portfolio working with Italian models. Participate in teaching & learning times organized by Kenny as well as other attendees. Best of all, get ready to have some fun – besides, there is no better way to spend your tax write-off! :)

Visit http://photoventure.kennykim.com for more details. I can’t wait to see you there!

Kenny Kim will share his unique path of how he started out in this industry and explain his branding, networking & marketing tips. He will also share tips about how to go about planning a perfect wedding day from a wedding photographer’s perspective.

For the first time ever, Yanni Tzoumas, the publisher & executive editor of highly acclaimed Grace Ormonde Wedding Style magazine will offer his perspective on the wedding industry, insight into the editorial review process and even spend some time doing a portfolio critique for what to submit to a magazine.

Whew. Time really does fly. Subjectively & objectively. This past month of May has been a whirlwind. I got to attend my first Chicago Blackhawks playoff game, photographed a wedding in New Orleans, shot handful of engagement and family sessions, photographed an unbelievable wedding in Italy, came back to Chicago to photograph a gorgeous Indian wedding and more. June is no diferent. In just 10 days I photographed another eSession, wedding, spoke at South Bend, Indiana and got to attend a concert of an artist that I really enjoy listening to. Did I mention it’s only June 10th? I wanted to just quickly update you on 2 things:

I. SPEAKING AT SOUTH BEND, INDIANA
I was honored when Katie Whitcomb, a great photographer from South Bend, IN asked me to come out to speak at their local photographer’s meeting. So I dragged my roommate and trekked across state. I had a great time speaking to about 30+ photographers. Here are few photos from that event:

Everyone was so attentive and supported me with positive nods & smiles. I do have to admit though. We had this meeting inside of a chocolate store and the smell of chocolate was killing me!

Then I had a real treat waiting for me. My clients Cory & Sarah from a wedding I photographed in 11/11/2006 made a surprise visit to hear my talk! They drove over 2 hours to show their support. This almost brought tears to my eyes. As if being 2 hours was not bad enough, Sarah just delivered a baby three weeks ago and Cory is currently going through chemotherapy for his cancer! This couple has a special place in my heart as they are one of the reasons why I wanted to go into wedding photography in the first place. Read more about them here in my previous blog post.

I got to hold their precious baby Charis! Thank you Cory & Sarah so much for going out of your way to visit me here. I will continue to pray and think of you guys. Please keep in touch as often as you can!

And finally big thank you to Katie Whitcomb for organizing this meeting and inviting me to speak here. I look forward to coming back again. Shout out to my roommate Kenny Nakai from tagging along with me and capturing all these fun images as well!

II. KINA GRANNIS
I got to attend a concert by an up & coming talented artist in Kina Grannis. She is the youtube/online/twitter gal with a phenomenal voice & musical talent. I’m fascinated because she understands the power of the online social media and uses it to attract a huge following and allows her audience to connect with her through her transparency. This is a lesson we can all learn and apply to our business – allowing our clients to connect with us by sharing our lives with them. Everyone in the audience responded to Kina as if she was an old friend that they haven’t seen in awhile. She immediately connected with her audience just by being herself. I’ve been fan of her music and when she came to Chicago for her concert, I jumped at the opportunity to go listen to her live.

Of course being the camera geek that I am, I can’t help but to bring my camera along as my date and snapped a few photos of/for her:

Thanks for a great concert Kina. She is still on her national tour to promote her new CD called “Stairwells.” Check her out at one of the remaining cities here. Best wishes with the rest of your tour!

Hey everyone! I am back in Italy again. This time I am here to photograph a fabulous wedding of Meghan & Justin next week. I’m also here to plan out the details for my next PhotoVenture in the fall as well as a small private tour that I will conducting for some of my close friends & family in the summer. I arrived here few days early to get adjusted to the time zone here and to do some “PhotoVenture”ing on my own. After a long flight to Rome & an hour train ride to Terni, my friend Max Brunelli picked me from the station and we went back to his home. As I was resting there, I could feel my body wanting to shut down. One of the best way to fight jet lag is to get adjusted to their time zone immediately. So rather than sleeping, I forced myself to stay awake by going for a long drive with Max to the countryside of Umbria. We drove through various parts of Umbria passing by Narni, Amelia & Todi. Along the way we stopped at numerous locations to take some landscape photos. Speaking of which, I am making an effort to capture more landscape photos this year in hopes that somewhere down the road, I will be able to make my own travel book.

Here is some of my quick attempt at landscape photography. I was falling half asleep as I was editing them so please be kind. I’ll have plenty more after my trip/wedding shoot is done:

Finally, I want to leave you with a quote from Rick Steves, a prominent expert on world traveling: “Thoughtful travel engages us with the world… it reminds us what is truly important. By broadening perspectives, travel teaches new ways to measure quality of life. Globetrotting destroys ethnocentricity, helping us understand and appreciate other cultures. Rather than fear the diversity, celebrate it. Among your most prized souvenirs will be the strands of different cultures you choose to knit into your own character. The world is a culture yarn shop, and travelers are weaving the ultimate tapestry.”

Buon Viaggio!
