My buddy Ray Santana & I started Portfolio + Workshop with a goal to help photographers get their wedding business started on the right track. The first four workshops were held down in sunny Miami but this time we decided to take it on the road. Our next location was obvious: we wanted to bring Portfolio + Workshop to the coolest city in the U.S.!!! I might be a bit biased since I am from here but if you come to visit, you’ll agree with me (Just stay away during the winter
) that Chicago was the perfect place to host our next workshop.
We gathered at Kenny Nakai’s brand new studio in Chicago. Nathan Holritz of Photographer’s Edit joined us as our guest speaker as well as our sponsor for this event. Many friends in our industry have gathered to make this event possible. Big thanks goes out to Lillian at Starlight Makeup in Chicago for the amazing job styling the bride & the groom models. Gorgeous bouquets were designed by Grace at Vale of Enna Flowers. Charlene at Sweet Chic Events, Inc. & Pure Kitchen Catering provided a sweet table top for everyone to photograph.
Big thanks goes out to: Pixel2Canvas, Photographer’s Edit and Album Crafters for their support in sponsoring this workshop along with Camera Bits and Kubota Image Tools. We also like to thank Courtney Hildebrand from Modern Luxury Media for paying us a visit to talk about the importance of advertising.
All in all Portfolio + Workshop V was a big success and we are glad that photographers that attended this workshop left with valuable lessons and tools to help them get their business started. Here are some photos that were captured of our models during our photoshoot session the second day:
Here’s our group. I think some of us were a little bitter from the cold weather (hint: Uncle Ray). ![]()
Our goal during the shoot was to help the photographers learn how to capture these kind of images right out of the camera. Most us put our gear in Auto mode with AWB and spend countless hours behind the computer trying to perfect our image. Instead we taught everyone how to use proper color temperature and exposure to get the results in your camera. These images were pretty much out of the camera with a little saturation & sharpening added along with a touch of skin softening – three quick actions using Kubota Image Tools) will help everyone to learn and perfect the craft of using your camera as a tool to capture what you see. Hope to see you guys at the next workshop. Stay tuned for our next location in the future. For more information, visit the website.

Many times, I am commissioned for weddings outside of my town which makes it impossible for me to meet the potential clients. Videos are a great way for your clients to get to know you as a person and a photographer without meeting physically in person. While meeting people face to face is still the best, video is another great way to make an introduction. I recently had a chance to work with Chris & Oliver Cinema to put together a video that showcased some of the places I have been to this past year and compiled a video/interview. This was debuted at my WPPI platform presentation: “Confessions of a Wedding Photographer”. Here is a promo poster for my talk:
And here is the video that was played at the presentation:

It wasn’t Disneyland, but it was definitely one of those small world stories.
Richard and Tina had been planning a summer wedding at the famous New York Botanical Gardens in Brooklyn, NY. Tina began researching wedding photographers and at the suggestion of a friend, she looked up my website. When she noticed my studio was based in Chicago, she jokingly asked her fiancé if he knew me – given he was also from Chicago. When Richard shot back “Sure, I grew up with him,” she laughed off his joke and went on her merry way of planning their wedding. And I’m sure you know where this story is going…
We did grow up together! We attended the same church together for years but when high school ended, we unfortunately lost touch. I was photographing another wedding last year when I ran into Richard’s parents. They informed me Richard was dating a young woman and was going to be getting married soon. A few weeks later Richard and Tina contracted me to photograph their wedding day!
I love small world stories like that and we had a great time laughing about just HOW small the world really is. What’s even more remarkable is that two amazing people like Richard and Tina found each other. I had always respected Richard. He is a true gentleman and nothing but class. Tina is just the perfect compliment to his demeanor and I couldn’t be happier for them.
This New York Botanical Garden wedding turned out to be one of the most charming weddings I’ve ever had the honor of photographing, and how could it not be? It was coordinated and catered by the amazing Abigail Kirsch Events – one of the absolute finest wedding coordinators in New York City! And the hot, humid weather New York had been experiencing seemed to take a brief hiatus – just for the day – so that Tina and Richard, their family, friends and honored guests, could all enjoy a nice, warm summer wedding in the garden.
I also like to thank Nicole Chan for coming to assist me that day all the way from Boston! Here are some photos from this perfect wedding day (For more photos, visit their Facebook Gallery):
Richard & Tina! Thankfully, it really is a small, small world and I’m so honored to have played a small part of your world on July 31st. Congratulations to the two of you!

I can’t lie. As a wedding photographer – there are many perks that come with the job. Creating art. Working for myself. Meeting new friends. Being a part of such an important moment in two individual’s lives. The life of a wedding photographer is hard to beat. But I have to admit – I think my favorite part is listening to each couples version of When Harry met Sally. In this case – it was When Jane met David.
Jane and David were both attending Harvard getting their graduate degree. Jane was like a magnet to which David literally felt compelled to. He was a welcoming greeter at his local church the day Jane stopped in for a visit and he was immediately smitten. Jane needed a bit more convincing. When a group of friends went on a ski trip months later, David made his move. A very subtle move which included conversation and dessert. It wasn’t long after that Jane started to see David in a whole new light – and it had nothing at all to do with her sweet tooth!
Earlier this summer I made a special trip out to Saratoga, California to photograph David and Jane as they said I do at the picturesque Montalvo Arts Center. The Montalvo Arts Center, built in 1912, is set on 175 gorgeous acres of land with miles of hiking trails, an artist’s residency, three performing arts venues and a breathtaking garden.
The morning ceremony was held outdoors in the Montalvo Arts Center, and was followed by a luncheon at the Plumed Horse restaurant. I don’t know the specifics on the dress – but Jane looked absolutely stunning. And David – you dress up nice! I think tuxedo adds a nice touch of class. After the celebration began to wind down, the newlyweds and I made another trip out to the Cooper Garrod Vineyard for a little afternoon photo shoot and I swear to you, I don’t have one image that isn’t filled with their glowing, happy, smiles.

David & Jane – your story is one of my favorites and I can’t wait to hear about the many adventures you two will embark on together. Thank you for letting me be a part of your big day. Congratulations! Big props to my friend Nicole Kulinski for assisting me on at this wedding as well. We had a blast at this wedding!
