Even though my main focus is in wedding photography and will probably continue to do so in the future, once in a while, I like to venture into other types of photography such as family & married couple lifestyle sessions. Last winter I was introduced to the Kim family by a good friend of mine to do their family photoshoot in December. Because it was so cold outside, we both agreed that doing any shoot outside would be a bad idea. So we agreed to split the photo session into two and we just finished the second one last week. Noah is even cuter than before. I love all the fun faces he made and even at this early age, he is practicing his tough mean look. I also suggested to Dennis & Christy, since they never had engagement sessions done before, that they do a short lifestyle session. We spent couple of hours at the Botanical Garden in Glencoe, IL and had a great time strolling through the park and snapping some fun photos. Here are some of the results from their session. They are such good looking couple/family I had hard time narrowing the photos for the blog:

Here’s Noah clapping for their parents as they share their moment.

Then shortly after Noah fell asleep then mom & dad decided to take some fun casual lifestyle sessions of their own:

They are such great looking couple and relaxed in front of the camera that I had to keep snapping away!

I love these moments in between poses where their true personalities come alive:

Noah then woke up happy from his nap sleeping…

We are all one big happy family! Thank you so much Kim family for your kindness, generosity and your giving spirit! I cannot wait to spend more time with you guys and see Noah grow up.

Joanne Kim, soon to be (Joanne Lo aka JLo) was a freshmen in college and Dan Lo was that good looking Jersey Boy Sophomore. They met at a church gathering when Joanne introduced herself to him. They have been inseparable since then and she is now a teacher and he an accountant. They are now moving on to the next stage in life by tying the knot this summer. I had the privilege of knowing these two guys since the beginning so I am honored to be their wedding photographer. I want to share another lesson about shooting an engagement session after sharing some photos with you. We spent the afternoon going to various places around Chicago area including: the Fulton Market, Millenium Park, Kinzie Bridge, etc. We had a blast catching up on the past and talking about the details of their wedding day (which sounds awesome by the way). If you visit my facebook page, you will find more from this session. For the sake of blogging, I only posted 12 images:

Lesson to share: Often times I see so many photographers (including myself) talking to our clients during the shoot using “photography lingo”. Because we as photographers constantly talk about it, I think we easily make the assumption that others (including our clients) understand the same terms. Often times they might be just too nice to ask what we exactly mean. Other times they just brush it off as it is no big deal. But a good way to communicate to your clients during a shoot is to show by example. Rather than shouting out “hold out that arm!”, show them which arm and how to do it. Ask them to mirror your movement and let them know that you would not make them do things that you would not do yourself.

When I did my engagement session in Italy with Italian models I had the difficulty of overcoming the language barrier. It was frustrating not being able to explain to them in words what I wanted them to do. So I had to resort to communicating by example. Using eye contact and body language, I was able to get them to do the things I want them to do.

Another example is the use of words. Make sure that your words are clear so that anyone can understand it. During the photoshoot with Dan & Joanne, I kept asking Dan to “Squeeze!” What I really wanted Dan to do was the embrace Joanne tightly because usually that lets out a laughter and/or a fun reaction from the girl. Every time said “squeeze!” Dan just smiled at Joanne resulting in some fun moments captured. But half way into our shoot, when I yelled “Squeeze!” again he stopped, looked at me and said: “Kenny, what do you mean by squeeze?” We both laughed as I realized that I did not communicate with him properly. Once I explained to him my concept, he understood the concept and did it without even me saying it to him!

So next time you communicate with your clients, be sure to show by example and to use words that everyone can understand. Happy shooting!

Finally Joanne & Dan, thanks so much for spending the day together. And how can I forget the Alaskan crab dinner? Wow! I can’t wait for your wedding in Chicago! Ci vediamo! (See you soon!)

Lessons From the Road – Landscape Photography & Traveling

Hey everyone! I am back in Italy again. This time I am here to photograph a fabulous wedding of Meghan & Justin next week. I’m also here to plan out the details for my next PhotoVenture in the fall as well as a small private tour that I will conducting for some of my close friends & family in the summer. I arrived here few days early to get adjusted to the time zone here and to do some “PhotoVenture”ing on my own. After a long flight to Rome & an hour train ride to Terni, my friend Max Brunelli picked me from the station and we went back to his home. As I was resting there, I could feel my body wanting to shut down. One of the best way to fight jet lag is to get adjusted to their time zone immediately. So rather than sleeping, I forced myself to stay awake by going for a long drive with Max to the countryside of Umbria. We drove through various parts of Umbria passing by Narni, Amelia & Todi. Along the way we stopped at numerous locations to take some landscape photos. Speaking of which, I am making an effort to capture more landscape photos this year in hopes that somewhere down the road, I will be able to make my own travel book.

Here is some of my quick attempt at landscape photography. I was falling half asleep as I was editing them so please be kind. I’ll have plenty more after my trip/wedding shoot is done:

Finally, I want to leave you with a quote from Rick Steves, a prominent expert on world traveling: “Thoughtful travel engages us with the world… it reminds us what is truly important. By broadening perspectives, travel teaches new ways to measure quality of life. Globetrotting destroys ethnocentricity, helping us understand and appreciate other cultures. Rather than fear the diversity, celebrate it. Among your most prized souvenirs will be the strands of different cultures you choose to knit into your own character. The world is a culture yarn shop, and travelers are weaving the ultimate tapestry.”

Buon Viaggio!

When God decides to put two people together to fall in love, he will use any means to make it happen. I have to admit I used to be one of those person that was skeptical about online dating but I am meeting more and more couples meeting through this method. This was also true in Joy & Shaun. How in the world does a guy from Illinois going to school in Michigan meet a gorgeous gal like Joy from New Mexico? I had met Shaun previously before the engagement shoot but I had not met Joy yet. Not only was she drop dead gorgeous, she brought me some coffee from New Mexico! I was in love with them already. :)

I had so much fun spending the entire afternoon with them in my favorite city in the US. We started out our session at the University of Chicago where Shaun had went to school then finished our day off in the downtown area. Big thanks to Melissa Hayes for tagging along with me on this shoot and giving me a hand! Please take a moment to look through the photos and at the end there is a little lesson/tip for all the photographers. Enjoy:

Here is the final photo that I wanted to share for a quick lesson. Looking at the photo below, it looks like a nice quiet intimate moment inside an empty church, right? Well, not really. Read on…

Shaun really liked the Rockefeller Chapel on campus and requested to take a few photos inside. So we walked over there only to discover that there was some kind of a service/meeting going inside so the sanctuary was packed with people. Shaun and Joy were little disappointed but I did not want them to feel that way on their engagement session. I am a firm believer that when “life gives you lemon, you make lemonade out of it.” So I looked around for a bit trying to see if I can think of an alternate solution. Bing! (That’s the sound of light bulb turning on inside my head) Then I asked Shaun & Joy if they don’t mind being little bit adventurous. I think they liked the idea of that. I had found a small pathway between the church wall & the pews. I knew we could not communicate verbally since there was a service going on. So I asked them to go over to a specific spot and come up with their own pose (I’ve instructed them on several poses during the shoot up to this point so I knew they would deliver). To give you an idea of what the setting was actually like, I took the next photo to show the risk that my clients was willing to take to get the shot above:

At first they were a bit nervous about standing there posing and kept looking over to the congregation. I thought I placed them at just at the last row of where people were sitting to be inconspicuous. Then I walked over there after I had taken the shot to realize what was going on. I did not realize that there were several more rows of pews right next to them filled withe people and they were all staring at them smiling while they posed! But I’m so proud of my clients – they stuck through with it, ignore the congregation and posed as I asked them to!

So what is the lesson here? When you get stuck in a situation, you can always find alternate solution. When you get excited about your photography, your clients will too and will even risk a bit of embarrassment to get the shot that you/they want. So next time you shoot, try to push yourself more to do something different. Hope this was helpful for some of you out there. Let me know and I’ll try to do a few more of these in the future posts.

Joy & Shaun, thank you so much for spending the afternoon with me. Your photos were amazing thanks to you guys being such awesome models. I cannot wait for your wedding in New Mexico this summer!
