Central New Jersey Wedding: Vanessa & Rob

December 31, 2009

This was my third wedding that I got to take pictures for a photographer. It is always an honor when they ask you since they have high standard for photography. I had the pleasure of teaming up with Ahmet Ze & Tomas Flint for this wedding. Vanessa is a photographer and Rob is a videographer. They go together like hand and a glove. They met at a wedding and quickly became friends. Three months later, Rob asked her hand in marriage and now make quite a team. Vanessa is also a full-time school teacher, speaks multiple language and can also be a model. :) She has second shot for me in numerous occasions and I was thrilled to be there to photograph her wedding. I knew someone like Vanessa deserved a great guy and Rob did not disappoint. We expected a snowy or freezing cold weather for a December wedding but it turned out to be a sunny & gorgeous day.

The wedding ceremony took place at a small beautiful chapel called the Church on the Hills in Ocean, NJ

She had 11 bridesmaids. Yes, 11! :)

Introducing Kenny Kim T-Shirt Version 4!

December 18, 2009

Huh? Kenny Kim T-shirt? What’s that? I know it must sound strange to hear someone making a t-shirt for themselves – so let me try to explain. I love t-shirts. I have been designing t-shirts since 1993 for various events and occasions before I became a photographer. So as I embarked on this journey of becoming a photographer back in 2006, it dawned upon me that I should continue this tradition and make a t-shirt for myself to help promote my business.

Every year, I come up with a t-shirt to celebrate the number of years I have been in business. The 4th version marks my 4th year. Each year has represented all the hard work, dedication and the steps I have taken to be where I am today and making these shirts is a way to remind myself of where I have been and where I am headed.

Regarding design, one of the toughest thing to do is to design something for yourself – even though I have a graphic design background and have done plenty of designs for others. So with the help of my talented designer friend Al Navata from Navata Design and a creative inspiration from my friend & talented photographer Lisa Carpenter, I have came up with the design for my next t-shirt:

2010 Kenny Kim T-Shirt: Caution This Photographer Makes Frequent Stops! - Shirt Concept by Al Navata Design (http://www.navatadesign.com)

2010 Kenny Kim T-Shirt: Caution This Photographer Makes Frequent Stops! - Shirt Concept by Al Navata Design (http://www.navatadesign.com)

The concept behind the design is simple: The arrows represent not only the different destinations that I (as a photographer) go to, but also the the different tasks that my job requires. Some are big and some are small but they all count and are important part of what we do. It also represents communication. The arrows in the right design and the symbols in the left design are the standard international signage – and just like photography, it communicates to people all over the world. Finally, the phrase “CAUTION: THIS PHOTOGRAPHER MAKES FREQUENT STOPS” was created with the help of my friend Lisa Carpenter during our PhotoVenture Trip to Italy. As we were walking through various towns and cities in Italy, all of us would make random stops to photograph something that caught our eyes. Lisa then made a comment: “Kenny, I think you should come up with a shirt that says: ‘Caution, this photographer makes frequent stops.’” That was an eureka moment and I had to incorporate this into my next design with her permission. :)

So without further adieu, I would like to introduce my new shirts:

Chicago Model Fashion Beauty Photo Shoot

December 17, 2009

This week I had a chance to do something outside my wedding photography element. I got to work with a San Francisco-based model (you might recognize her from a previous lifestyle shoot I did back in September) named Crystelle. She is a friend of mine and does professional modeling. Working with models is a great way to practice your craft as a photographer. You can also learn their posing techniques and implement them on the wedding day with your bride or on your next lifestyle engagement session. It was a freezing day in Chicago so we went to various indoor & outdoor locations in Evanston downtown area for the shoot. Crystelle is a trooper and did a great job despite the Chicago weather.

Big thanks goes out to Lillian from Starlight Makeup Chicago for providing hair & makeup for the shoot. She did an amazing work on Crystelle! She even came out to the shoot w/ us and helped me w/ lighting and even some posing tips. If you need referrals for a professional stylist, look up her company!

Here are some photos from the shoot. I would love to hear comments & suggestions from fashion shoot photographers (if you are out there reading my blog). Be kind, I don’t do this too often! And if you are a model wanting to do lifestyle/fashion shoots like this, drop me a note. I don’t have time to do much of these but would love to do it once in awhile to sharpen my skills & improve my portfolio.

Trailer for Thirst Relief Project in Tanzania

December 14, 2009

As most of you know from my previous blog entry, I had the privilege of going on a special project for Thirst Relief International last month to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in Africa. Bob Davis (Video Stud 1), Anton Lorimer (Video Stud 2), Jim Davis Hicks (President/Boss Man) & I all agree that we had a trip of a lifetime capturing video & photo footage to use to help promote what Thirst Relief is doing around the world to face the water crisis. I wanted to share (hot off the press) the trailer that Anton has just posted to wet our appetite. The three of us were all armed with our Canon gears (5D & 7D for video & Mark 1D III for photos) and were able to capture some amazing footage of what’s going on in Tanzania.

Perhaps you can consider giving Thirst Relief a donation this holiday season in the midst of all our busy shopping season. It takes $5 dollars to impact a life by giving them access to clean drinking water that we take for granted. Together, we can make a difference in this world.

Chris Tomlin 2009 Glory In The Highest Tour – Chicago, IL

December 9, 2009

A group of my friends and I drove through a typical Chicago wintery storm to Hoffman Estates, IL this week to attend Chris Tomlin’s Concert – Glory In The Highest Tour 2009. I got an official pass to photograph the concert while my friends enjoyed the concert themselves. This must be like 3 or 4th time covering him but I am a big fan of his music. I think Chris is one of the most gifted Christian songwriter/artist of this decade. We also had chance to listen to Louie Giglio give a message on Christmas followed by a song performed by an upcoming artist Audrey Assad.

I enjoy photographing non-wedding events when the occasion comes up. It helps me to practice my craft and to learn the technical things of photography. Concerts provide different challenges with lights constantly changing. So I am finding myself adjusting my exposure and white balance. It can get overwhelming at times but it is actually a great way to get used to your settings so that you can do them with your eyes closed if you had to (practically since where I am shooting from is dark).

Here are some images from the concert:
