I got to attend PhotoPlus Expo for the first time this year. Last year I missed out because of wedding so I was really looking forward to finding out what’s going on in the photography industry. This expo is slightly bigger than WPPI (which takes place in Vegas) but is gear toward all industry where as WPPI concentrates more on weddings & portraits. I think I like WPPI better just because it feels more family-like and is focused towards what I do. Needless to say, it was a good show and I enjoyed walked around the tradeshow booths, got some cool gear, and new ideas for my business. Just like WPPI, what also made this expo great was the people I got to hang out there with. Here are some photos that I took there with caption:

Day before the tradeshow began, I walked around SOHO area and did some shopping with Gene Higa, Ann Hamilton, Tomas Flint, Erich Camping & my new friend Colin Michael – who is proudly sporting his borrowed scarf from Gene. :)

Tflint & Gene-O got along great from the start. Good times…

Hellooo…Jacob Center….

My Album company GraphiStudio whom I was introduced to by Bob Davis & Mike Colon during their tour had a big booth there. :)

Finally got to meet my rep Mike Lucas in person. We must’ve talked hundreds of times on the phone but never had the pleasure of meeting in person. :)

Here’s Michelle Kersten & Dario Righetto giving us a presentation about some new & exciting things coming up in the near future from Graphi.

Joe Buissink caught me sneaking up on him! :-) Jim Garner looks like he’s really interested in the speaker.

Or maybe he was just thinking about what he wanted to say when he got up to speak. :-)

For $28,000, you can have this lens (200-500mm f2.8). No thank you. I’ll take the car.

Always good hanging out with my friends Bob & Dawn Davis

Kevin’s got some actions. Do you? Actually he made the actions.

DJ’s always networking & talking to other photographers.

Ran into Rachel Larson. Not sure where Mike was so I took the opportunity to grab a shot w/ the lovely Rachel. Later on that day, I got to do a quick couple’s session with them at Central Park. I’ll blog about that another time.

Skip Cohen looked like he was about to yell “No Pictures!” but it was too late…

Here’s Gary Fong demonstrating his Orgami diffuser. I forgot to pick one up. I really like this product!

The real ‘ubiquitous’ Dane Sanders pops out of nowhere to surprise the ladies…

Good ol’ Becker walking around interviewing people for the [b]school. These guys are good friends…

Pretty clever way of advertising…I hope someone doesn’t trip while reading this ad…

I spotted Justin & Mary Marantz from 50 yards away. I started snapping some shots of them and they immediately starting posing. I love it.

Tiffany Yoder works for Gary Fong. She just got married. I stopped by the booth to congratulate her.

Here’s Jessica Claire interviewing Jim Garner. Two are good friends and both of them carry (no pun intended) a product that pretty much every photographer uses (Boda & Shootsac).

I got to do a small video interview for DWF. They asked me about the use of facebook for networking. It was fun. :)

Bob is always giving talks and lectures. Here’s a shot of him giving a demonstration on the new 50D.

All in all it was lot of fun. NY is starting to grow on me. :)

What happens when the best of the east meets the best of the west? You get a fun filled, information-packed workshop! One of my purpose for thetrip out to NY was to help out at a workshop that was hosted by Jason Groupp & Gene Higa.

We spent the entire day at Jason’s urban studio in the heart of NY. It was exciting to see two different styles and personalities come together. Another NY-based photographer Brian Dorsey also joined as a special guest speaker and gave a quick talk about marketing. The attendees were great and eager to learn. All in all we had a blast in learning from one another. The photoshoot with the models were amazing. Big thanks goes out to Lindsey Thorne, Jason’s studio assistant who ran around like a mad woman in taking care of the logistics. She even gave a brief talk on how she designs her albums for Jason. Michelle Kersten from GraphiStudio stopped by to talk about some exciting things happening at Graphi.

Here’s our beautiful models getting ready to rock NY in style!!!

Lens Rental generously donated some lenses to try out at this workshop. This image of our model Amanda was shot using Canon’s new 200mm F/2.0L. It is straight out of my Mark III w/ virtually no post process. What a great lens!

Here’s us taking a break from our first photoshoot session:

Time Square = bright lights, big city…can’t go wrong w/ any photoshoot here…

Our models Nick & Aliya striking a pose…

And that’s all folks! It was a short but sweet day. We can all say that we HEART NY!

I took a photo of myself because this had to be by far the smallest wedding cake I’ve seen! Someone call Guinness World Record office!

Congratulations guys!

Ideally I wanted blog about each day at Joe’s workshop but seeing how I am getting more and more behind on my blogging, there is no way this was going to happen. So I will try to just briefly wrap up days 2-4 here in this beautiful retreat center in Eagle Creek, OR.

As I walk away from this workshop, I’m blown away by the number of talented photographers that were here. Most of the ones that I’ve attended before had a good mix of newbies as well as experienced ones. But this one was different. It was amazing to meet talented folks from Mexico, Russia, Canada and all parts of US that wanted to learn from one of that inspires all other photographers in this industry in Joe Buissink. It was a timely workshop/retreat for me as I gained a better sense of who I am as a photographer and what I bring to this industry. He helped us chisel away the positive characteristics that already engrained in us and taught us to improve on our weaknesses as well. Although Joe taught us everything about his style, approach, and techniques, we walked away not wanting to copy everything that he does – but to learn what has worked for him and figure out what will work for us.

Being able to spend some quality time away in such solitary place brought all of us closer together in such short period of time and I feel like I’ve gained some good friends from this workshop. Thank you everyone!

Now without further a due, here are some of my images from the workshop. (Thanks to Lisa Richmmond for allowing me to use some of her images here. The ones without my logo are hers):

Shanna did a great job modeling for us in the wet marshes of Portland forest!

Joe playing with his son Sebastian while Marilyn (Joe’s wife) looks from a far. I snapped this in an instant and I really like it for some reason.

He’s such a cute boy!

Lisa grabbed a shot of me in action… (My buddy Andres Valenzuela was always getting in my shots :-) )

Christina was a great model for us as well!

More photos of Shanna

Having little fun w/ Shanna :)

Joe is such a kid at heart! :)

Here’s Igor & Lana – husband/wife duo from Russia. I was so blown away by their work! Sign me up guys. I’ll take your workshop!

Tony Senior wins the best name award. His last name IS Senior. So his full name is: Tony Senior Sr. :) He tried signing up for facebook and they rejected him b/c they thought he was using a fake name! :)

Salvador Carmona from Mexico City! :) Bueno!

What a fun group! Can’t wait to connect again:

My trip to West Coast didn’t end in Portland, OR. Friday morning, Andres and I drove up to Seattle to chill in the city and meet up with some old friends. We ended up jam packing lot of things in the two short days that we were there. Seattle is so full of culture and history – not to mention the breath-taking landscape. I came back with ton of fun photos that I wanted to share with you guys. The photos are numbered in groups of 4 and you can refer to the comments that way if I leave any:

1) We got to take a tour inside Starbucks corporation. Due to security reasons we were not allowed to take photos inside. Yet they let us inside with our cameras. :) So we managed to snap a few shots. The ones that we think might breach their security, I am not going to post obviously out of respect for the company. But it was fun visiting the mecca where I basically throw all my money away to.

1)Big thanks to my friend Jessie for showing us around. She works for them. :) 3) Some folks outside of Starbucks playing chess. It looks so peaceful and fun for some reason. 4) Someone knew I was going to be here and spray painted my sign! :)

Some shots we snapped walking around Pike’s Public Market:

4) This fish weighs about 20lbs. Wow. My fingers smelled fishy for rest of day :-(

2) Ran into my online friend Caroline Cho there. How random is that? It was good to see her. She tried to refer me to someone working at the the fish market who’s getting married later on. She rocks! 3) The workers demonstrating their signature fish toss. The guy threw one at me too right after. I freaked out and caught it only to realize it was fake! Good one…

3) This is Jessica Hanaumi‘s son. He is only 7 mo’s old. She came out with him to hang out with us. How cool is that?! 4) About to visit the original starbucks store. I get nostalgic everytime I come back here.

1) My friend Joey Bowles that I met at Vegas Love Story workshop last year came out to hang out with us as well!

We visited the famous gum wall and the graffiti alley. It was cool at first then it grossed me out. Andres and I were stuck on the wall. :)

2) This dude made his eye balls bulge out so far that I thought they were going to pop! The rest are some photos of random people I ran into there.

3) We shared one slice of cheesecake together. It was yum. It better have been – I paid $6 for that one slice!

Then the next day we took Seattle’s famous underground tour near Pioneer Square. I had no idea this part of city was built on top of another one!

We then went out to the Lake Union and Andres’ friend Sarah had a buddy Jared who took us out sailing. That was such a treat. It was so relaxing to just chill and floating around the lake for an hour. :) We even rode by the house where they filmed the scene from Sleepless In Seattle. :)

I leave you with this final image. Hope you guys enjoyed them! :)

This week I’m in NY helping out at Jason Groupp & Gene Higa’s workshop and then cruising around PhotoPlus. Look forward to seeing everyone there! :)
