February 14, 2007

EDIT: Happy Valentines Day (belated). If any couples out there got engaged that day, be sure to look me up at kennykim.com. Hee hee, this is a shameless plug-in for my photography business. I’m finally back in chi-town. Strange to say, but I kinda missed the cold weather.

Big shout out to my small group down at Champaign to took time to visit my house while I was away to clean the snow off my driveway! Of course they then crashed there to study but I don’t mind that at all. Thanks guys!

I’ll be in the city all weekend shooting at the NCAA national indoor tennis tournament. Give me a shout if you want to hang out at nights. I’ll post some tennis pics from the trip later on.
END EDIT

I decided to take some time during this trip to spend some time in San Francisco. “Frisco”, as the locals call it, is a beautiful city. Here you get the best mix of the ocean, mountain as well as the metro life-style. Big props to my new friend Ling and my old college buddy John Lim for showing me around. Because of them I got to see some cool parts of Frisco that I probably wouldn’t have discovered on my own. I’ll try to add some captions with the photos:

Apple’s headquarter (aka Mothership) is located 2 minutes from my hotel. I took a short visit
to their campus and bought some sounvenirs.

I think my favorite attraction was Alcatraz

Welcome to The Rock!

The locker room

This building reminds me of a building in the movie The Rock

From the warden’s office, you can see the entire Bay area

This is the real shower room. The one you saw in the movie The Rock is hollywood-made.

About to experience what solitary confinement is like…for 1 minute – the guard shuts the door really hard creating a banging noise – when you hear the slam, you almost get goose bumps.

In 1962, group of 3 guys successfully escaped the prison – but no one knows what happened to them. Here’s the cell that they broke out of – noticed the hole under the sink? It was dug w/ a spoon.

People listened attentively as the guide told us many stories about the Rock

The famous Fisherman’s Wharf

This guy at the Houdini shop made a card levitate. I couldn’t believe it.

Sea Lions hanging out by Pier 39 – they are hilarious!

Inside an actual submarine

Believe it or not, I witness the coast guards pulling a dead man out of the water. You can’t really tell here but here’s a link to the article that talks about it.

This is the Palace of Arts – place where Chris Sotelo proposed to Marah Catanus – this place was enchanting and impressive I must say…Good job Chris!

Sunset in the Pacific Ocean…

John took me to a hole in the hall Thai restaurant on corner of Geary & Leavenworth – the food was awesome & cheap!

By the way, congratulate him. He just got engaged over the weekend! Way to go!

And I leave you with a view of Frisco from Twin Peaks

PS. Does anyone have any images of snow from Champaign storm? Please post or email them to me. I’m really curious to see it for myself.

EDIT: Snow Day – Will someone post photos of the winter snow in Champaign or send me some over email? I’m really curious to see what caused U of I to close school. Thanks. END EDIT

Life Changers International Church – Hoffman Estates, IL

Despite the freeeeeeezzzing weather, over 3,500 gathering at this beautiful church auditorium to the much anticipated concert. Chris Tomlin has risen exponentially in popularity over the past couple of years – not just in Christian industry but across all streams of music genre. I had the privilege of photographing the event. The night opened up with a special guest Johnny Park who came from Ireland. The crowd fell in love with his irish accent and sense of humor. He warmed up the stage for Chris Tomlin to enter. After few minutes, Tomlin came on and he rocked the house. Then came the message. Louie Giglio delivered a powerful sermon on How Great is Our God, illustrating his main points with stars found in the universe and comparing earth to them. The purpose was to point out the fact that we are not that significant in this world and that we need to see the majesty and the greatness of our God. As the message soaked into the audience’s heart, Chris quietly re-entered the stage and ended the night drenching everyone’s soul in worship.

I think everyone there would agree that it was a great concert/worship. Word of God and praise mixed together results in powerful worship. I got blessed watching people worshipping God for who He really is. I also ran into lot of familiar faces (my previous and future wedding couples, alumni’s, a cute youth group girl name Claire, old friends, etc.) I even ran into the entire Cho clan!

And I apologize to others who I didn’t get a chance to talk to. There were so many people there! I also couldn’t take any photos of Chris after the concert as he had to fly out to LA to attend the Grammy’s immediately after the show.

Okay, now that you’ve been prepped about the concert, here are some photos to help visualize the event. Please do not use these without permission. Thanks!

BEGIN EDIT:
A true way to celebrate victory
Pastor Min gave an illustration about coach Tony Dungy during tonight’s message. He talked about how it was admirable for Coach Dungy to acknowledge that being a Christian Coach was more important that being the first African-American to make it to Superbowl. Ironically when I got home, I had an email sitting in my mailbox from my client (who happens to be a friend of Tony Dungy) asking me to post a photo of Coach Dungy on his website. I thought the photo captured the essence of what Pastor Min talked about and wanted to share it with you.

Caption: Indianapolis Colts, praying and thanking God after the Super Bowl. Coach Tony Dungy in center.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” – Colossians 3:23-24
END EDIT

Weaving through slippery road and 3.5 hours of bumper to bumper traffic, I finally made it to the much anticipated photo conference hosted by two of the best photographers in the industry in Joe Buissink and Marcus Bell. They were generous to share their tips, tricks, workflow, advice with all of us. I even took the opportunity to take them out for lunch (surprising no one else offered them) so I got to even spend a whole hour with them one on one picking their brains with questions (I hope they didn’t think I was too annoying!). They were just wonderful guys and very down to earth regardless of their success and I was glad that I could open myself to them. They had lot of encouraging things to share and I’ll definitely apply these things to my business.

But out of all the things that they shared, one of the most important lesson that I learned from them wasn’t from something that they shared – and that lesson was PASSION. They didn’t have to talk about it – it was so evident in their tone of voice, body language, enthusiasm and in their work. I think passion is one of the most admirable characteristic in a person and I truly believe it is what got them to be where they are. And this is what I would share with others: Be passionate about what you do but stay humble. I intend to follow these two rules and we’ll see where the Lord will take me with this photo business.

Here are some photos from the seminar:

There were over 80 other photographers from the Chicagoland area all trying to learn from Joe. Joe is a high-end celebrity photographer. He has covered hundreds of celebrity weddings and photoshoots including Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Garth, Leanne Rimes, Jessica Simpson, Kelsey Grammer, Hillary Swank, Steven Spielberg, and more.

Can you FEEL the passion?

I met a fellow asian photographer name Stacey. He’s a cool guy and we got along right away. He’s got some great work.

Here’s a picture Stacey took of Joe and I – Joe gets sponsored by Apple so he gets all the cool toys from them for free – No Fair!

I asked Joe to take this photo of me and Marcus – just so I can say that I have a photo taken by Joe – and look how it turned out! Ha ha, I had a good laugh – I guess even the best goofs up sometimes.

The second one turned out much better.

All in all, it was a trip well spent. Anyone out there going to Chris Tomlin’s concert in Hoffman Estates this saturday? If so, please say hi. I’ll be there shooting for the band.

February 6, 2007

It’s been non-stop busy since my last updated. Even this cold weather has not stopped from 2007 being busier than ever. Here’s a recap of what I’ve been up to:

  • CFC Winter Retreat – I didn’t get a chance to shoot any pictures but I believe Dan Lee did. Go check out his site for coverage and give him lot of comments for his hard work. Dr. Roy King was a timely speaker who shared from his heart. I got to apply one of the points from his message and learned to say no to some things to free up my schedule to do the best things.
  • Photographed Charles and Chunsun’s wedding – Traveled to Terre Haute, IN for a wedding. Who knew Terre Haute has 2 Starbucks? I was very happy to see that. (See photos below)
  • Photographed Rob and Shannon’s wedding – pictures coming soon!
  • Booked 3 more weddings for this year. (reaching 20 wedding mark soon!)
  • My own website will be launching shortly… Thanks for your patience!
  • Hosted the Superbowl party for my small group with spring roll & california maki style:

It was painful to watch the Bears play so bad. But you gotta give it to the Colts – Dungy and Manning were class acts in the way they handled everything. Congratulations to the Colts.
  • Here’s what to look forward to in next few weeks:

  • Attending a seminar hosted by two of the world’s renown wedding photographers:

Joe Buissink & Marcus Bell – Chicago, IL

Joe has shot numerous celebrity weddings such as, Christina Aguilera, Hillary Swank, Christina Applegate, Brendan Fraser, Jenny Garth, Jennifer Lopez & Jessica Simpson! It should be interested to learn what these guys have to share!

  • Chris Tomlin & Louie Giglio Photoshoot Coverage – Arlington Heights, IL
  • ATP pro tournament photoshoot coverage including Andy Roddick, James Blake, Mardy Fish & Amer Delic – San Jose, CA
  • NCAA National Indoor Tennis Championship photoshoot coverage: Top 16 teams in the nation under one house! – Chicago, IL
  • Bobby & Soojin’s family photoshoot – Barrington, IL
  • There are more things on the rise but I’ll stop here for now. Let me finish off by sharing some photos I shot for Charles and Chunsun in Terre Haute, IN.
