Real Life Notebook Story?
When I went to Hawaii this past March, I had this encounter with someone which I didn’t really share with too many people. Recently I told one of my friend about this incident (without thinking that it was a big deal) because we were talking about the movie Notebook. She started tearing up and cried as I told this story. I guess this could be considered a real-life Notebook scenario? I don’t know. Read this story and you be the judge (By the way, I thought Notebook was a bad movie – just my opinion. Please don’t hate!):
I visited this location in Hawaii called the Valley of the Temples. It is a famous burial ground where they display various tombstones from different cultures around the world. In the middle of this beautiful courtyard was a big statue of Virgin Mary, representing the Catholic-style grave. I wanted to go take a picture of the statue, but there was a man sitting there on a lawn chair reading a book. (See photo below) I didnt’ want him in my photo so I went up to him to ask him to move, and here’s how our conversation went (For story sake, we will call him Noah even though his real name is Scott):

Me: Excuse me sir…
Noah: Hi. Do you want me to move so you can take the photo?
Me: Uh, yes sir, I’m sorry, I hope you don’t mind.
Noah: Not at all. I get this often. I’m used to it.
Me: If you dont’ mind me asking, what are you doing here reading in the middle of a cemetery?
Noah: (pauses for second) Well my wife is here.
Me: Excuse me?
Noah: My wife. She died 11 months ago. She’s buried right here in front of me.
Me: I’m sorry to hear that. How did she die?
Noah: Ovarian cancer. She died at such young age. Before she had cancer, we used to travel alot together. This was where we came often. She loved it here. She wanted to be buried here when she died because she’s from Hawaii and she wanted to be buried with her forefathers.
Me: I see…and you just came to visit her today?
Noah: No, I’m here every day.
Me: Huh? What do you mean every…
Noah: Well, when I was with her I told her that I loved her and that I would never leave her. So I stuck by her through her sickness and death. And now this is where she is so I’ve been coming here to visit my wife every day.
Me: This seems like an expensive location to bury someone (it was in the middle of a national cemetery).
Noah: Yeah but she stood in front of this statue and told me this is where she wants to be buried. So I granted her wish.
Me: (I looked down and looked at the inscription) Are you the person on the left of her?
Noah: Yes. I’m going to be buried here next to her.
Me: So you travel here EVERY day to visit your wife?
Noah: Yes. I live 40 mins away. It helps also because I have korean friend (Mr. Kim) that comes here with me. He too lost his wife at early age so we come and visit our wives together and spend few hours here…
Well before I left, I thanked him and walked away. With his permission, I took a few photos to help remember this incident. What do you guys think? Is this a Notebook worthy story?
